Sir Samuel Griffith

Sir Samuel Griffith (1845-1920) was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales and migrated with his family to Queensland in 1854. He settled in West Moreton and later became a prominent figure in Australian politics and law. Griffith served as the inaugural Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and also played a crucial role in drafting the Australian Constitution. He was the Premier of Queensland on three occasions and contributed significantly to the development of the state's legal system.

The Watson Brothers

The Watson brothers, William Watt and Alexander John, were born in Ipswich in West Moreton. Both went on to achieve remarkable success in their respective fields:

  • William Watt Watson (1880-1957): He was an accomplished botanist known for his extensive research and contributions in the field of plant taxonomy. Watson conducted botanical surveys across Queensland and made significant contributions to the understanding of the state's flora.
  • Alexander John Watson (1889-1969): He excelled in the realm of classical music as a composer and conductor. Watson composed numerous symphonies, chamber music, and operas throughout his career. He also served as the conductor of various renowned orchestras, both in Australia and internationally.

Andrew Fisher

Andrew Fisher (1862-1928) was a respected Australian politician and the fifth Prime Minister of Australia. He was born in the small mining town of Crosshouse in West Moreton. Fisher led Australia's government during three separate terms (1908-1909, 1910-1913, and 1914-1915) and played a prominent role in introducing significant social reforms and economic policies.

Ruth Fairfax

Ruth Fairfax (1876-1948) was an influential figure in agricultural education and rural extension services. Born in Ipswich, Fairfax dedicated her life to improving rural communities and promoting innovation in agriculture. She played an instrumental role in establishing the Queensland Country Women's Association and served as its president for 28 years. Fairfax's efforts significantly contributed to enhancing the lives and opportunities for women living in rural areas.
